McLaughlin backstops Penncrest to playoff win

Goalkeeper Bryn McLaughlin recorded Penncrest’s 13th shutout of the season to send the third-seeded Lions into next Wednesday’s District 1 Class 3A semifinals with a 2-0 win over No. 6 Pope John Paul II Thursday.

Penncrest takes on the winner of the game between 10th-seeded Gwynedd Mercy and No. 2 Lower Moreland. That game was postponed until Friday afternoon.

Kat Mullaney opened the scoring with a long distance shot that went in off the crossbar. Corryn Gamber converted a cross from Gia Martyn to give the Lions a 2-0 lead in the second half.

That was more than enough offense thanks to McLaughlin and the play of Carly Dunford, Sarah Hughes, Kenna Kaut and Julia Mullaney on the backline.

In Class 4A:

Downingtown East 4, Strath Haven 1 >> Lizzie King headed home a direct kick late in the first half, but it wasn’t enough, as the Cougars scored three times in the second half to upset the sixth-seeded Panthers.

The victory sends East into Saturday’s quarterfinals against third-seeded Pennridge. The Rams blanked Wissahickon, 3-0.
