Delco playoff roundup: Sun Valley can’t solve Mesaros, Golden Panthers

Eleventh-seeded Sun Valley had no answer for Kayla Mesaros and No. 6 Pope John Paul II in a District 1 Class 3A opening-round girls soccer match Tuesday.

Mesaros posted three goals and an assist as the Vanguards fell, 5-0.

“We knew they had a potent offense and knew 21 (Mesaros) was going to be a problem,” said head coach Chris Lambert, who closed out his first winning season at Sun Valley (10-7-1). “She held up to that and wound up being a game-changer for them. She was a difference maker.”

PJP II advances to face No. 3 Penncrest, which is coming off a bye, Thursday.

Mount St. Joseph 2, Radnor 1 >> Allison Lanzone’s second-half tally wasn’t enough for the ninth-seeded Raiders.
In District 1 Class 4A first-round action:

W.C. Henderson 2, Garnet Valley 1 >> The No. 23 Jaguars held a 1-0 advantage at halftime, but Sydney Landi notched a pair of second-half tallies to lead the 10th-seeded  Warriors to victory.

GV fired the opening salvo nine minutes into regulation on a goal by sophomore Gia Dragoni. Senior goalie Ashley Bufano finished with 13 saves.
