Jenkintown takes down High School of the Future

It started with the offense of Jenkintown Saturday morning against High School of the Future after scoring 13 points in the first quarter, but it ended with a tough defensive performance as the Drakes notched a 27-12 win.
Jenkintown scored touchdowns on its first two drives of the game while relinquishing a touchdown on HoF’s first drive of the game as the teams played to a 13-6 score after the first quarter.
“We played well defensively,” Jenkintown coach Tony Owens said. “They moved the ball at times but we settled down. At times we ran the ball well and threw the ball well.”
The Drakes offense center around halfback Steve Charlemagne. The senior tallied 108 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries while also catching two passes for 18 yards.
“We’re hoping that if we can get the ball running or they pay too much attention to him we would like to throw the ball and be successful there and that’s what we hope to do,” Owens said. “
Offensively the Drakes struggled with some consistency in the passing game. Although some plays were well defended Jenkintown can find some solace in the fact there were some plays there to be made and were it not for an errant pass or a drop the play could have gone for big yardage.
“We had a couple big plays (to be had),” Owens said. “One ball was a little low, catchable, another one that was a sure touchdown off a check and we just have to do better from me down.”
Even though Jenkintown might have left some points on the board offensively, its play on the defensive side picked the team up. The Drakes hit the Firebirds for negative yardage or no gain, six times in the second half.
With the win, Jenkintown improved to 4-2 on the season. The Drakes currently sit at 2-2 in the Bicentennial Athletic League with its toughest games out of the way.
The Drakes will finish its regular season with a home game against Lower Moreland and an away contest at Morrisville, two games that should be pretty winnable for Jenkintown despite some of the inconsistencies that have been a problem at times this season.
“We’re in the middle of the pack as far as its concerned in the BAL,” Owens said. “We’ll see, we’re just focused on the next game. That’s what we want.”
