Main Line girls’ tennis wrap-up: Baldwin on winning track

The Baldwin School girls’ tennis team improved to 12-2 with a 7-0 win against non-league opponent Sacred Heart Oct. 7. Lauren Wang won 6-1, 6-1 at first singles, Francesca Douglas won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at second singles, Ari Hairston won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles and Torrie Smith won 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles. The doubles were led by Alexa Bartels and Alexis Shatzman who won 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles, Caroline Buchner and Alexa Decidue won at second doubles, 6-1, 6-1 and Madeleine Marr and Teagan Krane won at third doubles, 6-1, 6-0.

The Polar Bears defeated Germantown Academy, 5-2, Oct. 6, winning all the doubles matches and second singles, where Francesca Douglas won 6-3, 6-0. At first doubles, Torrie Smith and Alexa Decidue led the way with a 6-2, 6-1 won. Alexa Bartels and Caroline Buchner won 6-2, 6-1 at second doubles; Alexis Shatzman and Madeleine Marr won 6-4, 6-0 at third doubles; and Teagan Krane and Josephine Gantz won 6-2, 6-2 at fourth doubles.

In other Main Line high school girls’ tennis action:

Academy of Notre Dame (7-2) defeated Shipley, 5-1, Oct. 6, winning all but third singles. At first singles, McKenna Bramlage defeated Isabella Scardapane 6-0, 6-0; at second singles, Caroline Mackay defeated Jazzy Stone 6-3, 6-2; at first doubles, Natalie Hughes and Adrianna Bull defeated Brook Robinson and Kate Aschkenasy 6-3, 6-0; at second doubles, Sarah Crinnion and Mackenzie Irvine defeated Stella Tong and Audrey Fink 6-1, 6-1; and at third doubles, Alysa Dinh and Sara Holmwood defeated Julia Dickman and Haley Schwartz 7-6, 6-4.

Agnes Irwin defeated Germantown Friends, 7-0, Monday. At first singles, Kayla Neary defeated Malana Li 6-1, 6-0; at second singles, Ruthie Njagi defeated Lindsey Golden 6-3, 6-2; at third singles, Katherine Glaser defeated Alice Daeschler 6-4, 6-1; at first doubles, Lexi Short and Olivia Walsh defeated Caroline Kavanagh and Marlie Golden 6-3, 6-2; at second doubles, Carlin Sullivan and Lilly Baum defeated Emily Kastenberg and Toby Shore 6-1, 6-3; at third doubles, Jordyn Hurly and Sabina Smith defeated Piper Coes and Tsega Afessa 6-1, 6-0; and at fourth doubles, Sophie Yass and Phoebe Fry defeated Marion Standefer and Mesgana Afessa 6-0, retired.

The Owls defeated Springside Chestnut Hill, 6-1, Oct. 6, winning all but third singles. At first singles, Kayla Neary defeated Victoria Waltes 6-0, 6-2; at second singles, Kathryn Hall defeated Cindy Pan 6-2, 6-1; at first doubles, Lexi Short and Olivia Walsh defeated Mel Graves and Hannah Larkin 6-2, 6-2; at second doubles, Carlin Sullivan and Rachel Mashek defeated May Naish and Annabel Grove 6-3, 6-1; at third doubles, Jordyn Hurly and Sabina Smith defeated Allie Rosenfeld and Cayla McElwee 6-2, 6-1; and at fourth doubles, Sophie Yass and Phoebe Fry defeated Kellie Graves and Leslie King 6-0, 6-1.

 

Barrack Hebrew Academy defeated Kohelet, 5-0, Monday, winning at first singles (Talia Raikin), second singles (Dori Hoffman-Filler), third singles (Janie Hershman), first doubles (Jordyn Meltzer and Debbie Spivak) and second doubles (Talia Schley and Gabby Meltzer).

The Cougars defeated Delaware Valley Friends, 4-1, Oct. 6. Cougar winners included Talia Raikin (first singles), Janie Hershman (second singles), the duo of Jordyn Meltzer and Debbie Spivak (first doubles) and the pair of Talia Schley and Zoe Klein (second doubles).

Episcopal Academy defeated Germantown Academy, 5-2, Oct. 6, winning all its doubles matches and at second singles, where Eliza Aldridge defeated Emma Menkowitz 6-4, 6-2.

Friends’ Central lost to Germantown Academy, 4-3, Monday. FCS co-captain Zoe Ginsberg took a 6-2, 6-0 victory. The Phoenix’s second doubles team of co-captain Sophie Berger and Hannah Rossio won in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. At third doubles, FCS senior Samantha Brotman and freshman Anna Volpp came back after losing the first set to win in a third set super tiebreak 4-6, 6-3, (10-7).

Three days earlier, the Phoenix lost to Moorestown Friends, 4-1. The FCS first doubles team of Julia Nierenberg and  Hannah Rossio pulled out a come-from-behind victory, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6).

The Phoenix defeated Germantown Friends, 5-0, Oct. 4. For the three singles players, Skye Victor (No. 1) took a straight victory of 6-2, 6-0; co-captain Zoe Ginsberg (No. 2) remained undefeated with a 6-0, 6-0 victory; and Laura Barr (No. 3) played a marathon match and competed to the very end, wresting a 5-7, 7-5, 7-7 (10-6) victory. First doubles, consisting of Claire Coss and Julia Nierenberg had a close win of 6-3, 5-7, 11-9. To round out the match, second doubles of co-captain Sophie Berger and Hannah Rossio took a straight set 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Radnor defeated Great Valley, 5-0, Monday in the first round of the PIAA District One team tournament. At first singles, Grace Hederick defeated Adira Nair 6-0, 6-4; at second singles, Kanon Ciarrocchi defeated Vernika Saini 6-2,6-0; at third singles Jessica Lin defeated Kaavya Annan 6-0, 6-1; at first doubles Grace Moore and Lucy Hederick defeated Michele Oh and Alysha Agarwal 6-1, 6-3; and at second doubles Quinn Flannery and Bridget Dougherty defeated Sadie Buzan and Lindsay Miller 6-3, 6-4.

Shipley defeated Westtown, 4-1, Oct. 7. The Gators won at second singles (Jazzy Stone), third singles Grace Decatur, first doubles (Kate Aschkenasy and Brook Robinson) and second doubles (Stella Tong and Audrey Fink).
