Main Line girls’ soccer wrap-up: Unbeaten Conestoga battles Penncrest to a draw

The Conestoga High School girls’ soccer team tied Penncrest, 2-2, Tuesday. The Pioneers (9-0-4, 7-0-2) scored first with a solo effort by freshman, Caitlin Donovan, who pressured Penncrest’s centerbacks high up the field and got a quick touch in-behind them to finish past the keeper. Toward the end of regulation, trailing 2-1, Conestoga was awarded a free kick from 30 yards out from goal on the left side. Freshman outside back Calista Courtney hit a driven, low, curling shot right into the side-netting of the near post to tie the game at 2-2. Colleen Baldwin played the whole game in net for Stoga, and had 13 saves.

The Pioneers defeated Garnet Valley, 2-0, Oct. 6 in a Senior Night match-up. For the Pioneers, Nia Scott scored the first goal, assisted by Calista Courtney. The second goal was a penalty kick that was earned when forward Caitlin Donovan was brought down after dribbling through the Garnet defense. Senior captain Madie French blasted the penalty kick high into the top right corner. Shot totals were 22-8 in Stoga’s favor. Conestoga goalies Colleen Baldwin and Maeve Regan combined for five saves.

In other Main Line high school girls’ soccer action:

Episcopal Academy defeated Hun School, 2-1, in overtime Oct. 6. EA goalies Hannah Moriarity and Morgan Messner combined for five saves. Lauren Cunningham scored the first EA goal, with an assist from Lauren Rodio. In overtime, EA’s Lily Shaner scored on a direct kick, a rocket into the upper 90 of the net.

Friends’ Central lost to host Springside Chestnut Hill, 3-1, Monday. Trailing 1-0, FCS scored in the ninth minute of play when senior Lorna MacFarlane slotted her sister freshman Izzy clean in on goal, en route to a collected finish.

Three days earlier, the Phoenix battled Shipley to a 1-1 draw. Friends’ Central was able to strike first in the 25th minute, when senior Lorna MacFarlane settled a nice cross from Emily Lorry and powered it into the back of the net.

The Phoenix defeated host Friends Select, 3-0, Oct. 5. FCS got on the board in the first half with goals from seniors Hayden Posencheg and Lorna MacFarlane. Both goals came off of fine assists from Izzy MacFarlane and Ava Forman. Izzy MacFarlane tacked on the insurance marker in the second half, winning the ball in the box and slotting it into the bottom corner with her left foot. FCS goalies Mira Kauffman-Rosengarten and Eva Bartholomew combined for the shutout.

Merion Mercy Academy defeated Upper Darby, 2-0, Oct. 5, getting goals from Teresa Hegarty and Sophia Giangiordano.

Radnor defeated Marple, 1-0, Monday, as Maura Holst scored the game’s lone goal and Red Raider goalies Alexa Solomon (60 minutes in goal) and Anna Gurian (20 minutes) combined for the shutout.

The Red Raiders defeated Upper Darby, 6-0, Oct. 7. Maura Holst had a hat trick, and other goals wqere scored by Lindsey McShea, Nicole Massimino and Allison Lanzone. Radnor goalies Alexa Solomon and Anna Gurian split time in goal for the shutout.

Shipley defeated George School, 5-1, Oct. 5. Eliza Green scored two goals and dished out one assist, while Juelle Love, Elie Shapiro and Natalia Joseph each scored a goal. Hannah Brainsky dished out two assists, and Liv Hamilton had one assist.
