O’Hara claims third straight Catholic League title

Winning all but three individual matches through the Catholic League regular season and the first round of the PCL playoffs was not enough for the Cardinal O’Hara girls tennis team.
The Lions were determined to make it a perfect run through the Catholic League and did so with a 5-0 victory over Lansdale Catholic in the league title match at the Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center Tuesday.
With seniors Cara Degnan and Nina Ji leading the way, the Lions (11-4 overall, 8-0 league) swept all five matches in straight sets to win their third straight league title and earn a trip to the District 12 Class 3A championship match Oct. 20 at Lincoln High School.
“It was a great match,” O’Hara coach Patty Fitzgerald said. “Everyone played great, especially the doubles. They really came to play.”
Mackenzie Gardler and Caroline Lynch, and Erin Hutchinson and Jessica Dougherty won their respective doubles matches, 6-1, 6-1. Ji dropped just one game at third singles. Cara Degnan was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at second singles, while her younger sister Anna Marie, took a 6-2, 6-2 victory at first singles.
“The girls were really excited and focused going into today’s match,” Fitzgerald said. “They wanted it.”
