Radnor’s two entrants to the District 1 Class 3A girls tennis championships each returned with a victory.
Grace Hederick and Kanon Ciarrocchi prevailed in their first-round matches before being ousted in the second round of the 30-player tournament.
Hederick won a classic, outlasting Spring-Ford’s Tori Alexander in a marathon third-set tiebreak, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8). Ciarrocchi had an easier go, topping Council Rock South’s Vicky Lushnikov, 6-4, 6-2.
Both were bested in the next round. Hederick ran up against Henderson’s Emma Clark, who prevailed 6-3, 6-2.
Ciarrochi forced a second-set tiebreak from Downingtown West’s Jordan Bradley, but she ultimately bowed out, 6-1, 7-6 (1).
Clark proceeded to fall in the semifinal to top seed Meredith Lee of Owen J. Roberts and will play for third place when the tournament resumes Oct. 26. Bradley is in the other semifinal against her sister, Payton, a match which finished too late for this edition.
Academy Park’s two qualifiers, Breanna Reid and Vicky Outland, lost 6-0, 6-0 to Henderson’s Amanda Baxter and Conestoga’s Ashley Griffith, respectively. Emma Lee of Strath Haven dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Sophia Fischer of Council Rock North in the first round.
Central League singles champ Nina Hoog of Harriton fell in the quarterfinals to Jordan Bradley. She and Griffith will play in an effort to reach the fifth-place match. District 1 sends four players to the PIAA Championships.
