Main Line field hockey wrap-up: Shipley earns 5th consecutive win

The Shipley School field hockey squad blanked Washington High School, 4-0, Sept. 24 on Shipley’s Super Saturday, winning its fourth game in a row. Goals were scored by Ashleigh Gundy, Kate Scutt, Emma Durham and Olivia Sobel, with assists coming from Ashleigh Gundy, Sydney Nagorsky and Carolina Riley.

Tuesday, the Gators defeated Westtown, 2-0, for its fifth win a row, with both goals coming from Olivia Sobel.

In other Main Line high school field hockey action:

Academy of Notre Dame (5-2) defeated Springside Chestnut Hill, 7-1, Tuesday, getting two goals each from Lauren Curran and Mary Kate Neff. Quinn Maguire and Tina D’Anjolell each had one goal and one assist.

The Irish defeated West Chester East, 8-2, Sept. 23, getting four goals and two assists from Quinn Maguire and two assists and one goal from Mary Kate Neff. ND goalie Meghan O’Meara, in her first varsity start, got six saves.

Archbishop Carroll defeated Lansdale Catholic, 7-0, Sept. 21. Goals were scored by Sam Swart (four), Katy Curry (two) and Hannah Bateman.

Baldwin School lost to Episcopal Academy, 6-1, Tuesday. Senior captain Carrie Schaeffer scored the sole goal for the Polar Bears, assisted by freshman Maria Harlamova, who had a strong overall game against EA.

Conestoga improved to 10-0 (5-0 Central League) with a 3-1 win against Haverford Tuesday. Charlotte de Vries got things started followed by a goal from Haverford’s Laura Winters to tie the game up.  Kiley Allen and Charlotte de Vries connected with two minutes left in the first half to put Conestoga ahead.  Meredith Ross scored off an assist from Stephanie Hamilton with one minute left in the game to cap off the scoring for the night.

The Pioneers earned a 2-1 overtime win against Downingtown West Monday. Downingtown West took the lead in the first half.  Grace McEvoy tied it up for Conestoga with 13 minutes left in the second half, assisted by Charlotte de Vries. Conestoga’s Meredith Ross ended the match with a shot with only 2:58 remaining.

Episcopal Academy defeated Hill School, 2-1, in overtime Sept. 24. Corinne Zanolli scored the game-winner and dished out an assist, and Maddie Rehak tallied the other goal. Caroline Kelly had eight saves.

EA head coach Gina Buggy said, “This was a good team effort. Nice combinations throughout, our players really worked hard across the field the entire game. The Hill goalie played very well, stopping some formidable shots. All in all, a terrific team effort.”

Merion Mercy Academy (8-1-1) suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday, a 5-1 defeat against Villa Maria Academy. Jamie Natale had the lone Golden Bears’ goal.

The Golden Bears defeated Strath Haven, 4-0, Sept. 23. Jamie Natale scored three goals and Allie Scannepiecco tallied once. Margo Carlin dished out two assists and Caroline Steller had one.

One day earlier, Merion Mercy defeated Saint Basil Academy, 8-0. Goals were scored by Jamie Natale, Maureen McClatchy, Allie Scannapieco (two), Margo Carlin, Emily Hauck, Kaely Kyle and Arianna Lavelle. Assists were dished out by Jamie Natale and Margo Carlin.
