For the first time in its six-year history, Chester’s volleyball team has a winning record.
The Clippers came back from a two-set deficit Wednesday to defeat Academy Park, 3-2.
Chester (5-4 overall, 4-3 Del Val League) fell behind 2-0 after the Knights took the first two sets, both by scores of 25-17. Then, Chester came to life. With Clayshonia Cognon (14 kills, eight blocks) and Whitney Short (15 kills) providing the damage, the Clippers took the next three sets, 25-21, 25-18 and 16-14. Not only does the victory put Chester above the .500-mark for the first time, it was also the team’s first triumph against Academy Park.
In the Central League:
Ridley 3, Marple Newtown 1 >> Jackie Kelly and Melanie June combined for 42 digs as the Green Raiders took down Marple Newtown 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-17, 25-16). June had 25 of those digs and added four aces. Kelly finished with nine kills, many of them off sets by Jessica Tait, who totaled 23 assists.
Garnet Valley 3, Conestoga 0 >> The Jags (11-0, 8-0) continued to roll with yet another sweep at home. Scores of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-18 ensured GV stayed undefeated in matches and games. Gabby Davis keyed the offense with 25 assists. Nicole Loan finished with seven kills, while Meg Scott chipped in with seven digs and two aces.
Penncrest 3, Radnor 0 >> A couple of typical performances from Nikki Gargiule (22 assists, 15 digs) and Diana Balta (15 kills, 11 digs) produced a Lions sweep (25-19, 25-22, 25-17). Carly Venit chipped in with six kills and six aces, while Thy Langale contributed 19 digs. Penncrest improves to 9-3 overall, 6-2 in the league.
