Julia Hellman may have been the first Garnet Valley runner across the line Wednesday afternoon. But the support provided by her teammates ultimately earned the Jaguars a pair of narrow victories.
Hellman won a tri-meet at Bethel Springs Elementary School in 20 minutes, 22 seconds, but the Jaguars’ ability to capture fifth through seventh place earned helped it eke out wins of 22-35 over Ridley and 25-32 over Upper Darby.
Savannah Hake crossed the line in fifth, with teammates Anastasia Erley and Sophie Bushenkell hot on her heels.
Hellman outdistanced Upper Darby’s Dootleen Joseph for the individual crown. Joseph’s teammate Tanti Boduo was fourth to help the Royals edge Ridley, 24-32. Jamie Green led the Green Raiders continent in third.
Also in the Central League:
Strath Haven sweeps >> Maurisa Ogunde produced the finishing kick to edge a crowd of teammates for the senior’s first varsity race win in 22:01 as the Panthers swept the top 10 spots in trouncing Lower Merion and Marple Newtown by scores of 15-50.
Ava Crawford was second to Ogunde, with Steph Watson third and Teagan Kirby fourth. Strath Haven’s top 10 all broke 23 minutes.
Lauren Holt was Marple Newtown’s top finisher at 24:27, but the Tigers fell to Lower Merion, 15-48.
Haverford picks up a pair >> Connie Katcavage broke the tape in first place by a wide margin, her winning time of 21:05 pacing the Fords to victories of 19-44 over Penncrest and 15-50 over Springfield.
Second was Penncrest’s Liz Egan win 21:49.
Haverford claimed the next six places, led by Kate Ryan, in third.
Penncrest’s Paige Jacobs finished ninth, boosting the Lions to an 18-45 victory over Springfield.
Boys Cross Country
Depth was the key for Ridley, with third-place Sean Scandle pacing five Green Raiders into the top 10 to score wins of 23-32 over Garnet Valley and 25-32 over Upper Darby.
Scandle was third for the Green Raiders in 17:56, a spot ahead of Zack Forney (19:14).
Upper Darby’s Syed Shah was the top finisher, but the Royals fell to Garnet Valley, 26-32. Kyle Berardi led the Jags in second place with Joe Colavito fifth.
Also in the Central League:
Abrahams powers Haverford sweep >> Fresh off his win at the Briarwood Invitational, Abrahams outkicked Penncrest’s Avery Lederer by two seconds in 16:15 to help the Fords top Penncrest, 25-34 and Springfield, 15-50.
Elliott Miciek was fourth for Haverford.
Justin Senackerib claimed third place for Penncrest as it topped Springfield, 15-48.
Lower Merion eases to two wins >> Teddy Neckowicz, Charlie Hermann and Evan Hassman compiled a 1-2-3 finish with in nine seconds of one another as the Aces topped Strath Haven, 19-42, and Marple Newtown, 15-50.
Peter Armour finished fourth, a spot quicker than Evan Chen, as Haven beat Marple, 15-49.
In the Del Val League:
Glen Mills 15, Chichester 40 >> Tahir Grimes and Gage Heim took the top two spots as the Battlin’ Bulls claimed a Del Val win Tuesday. Tylir Fowler led Chichester in sixth.
