Cardinal O’Hara’s Cara Degnan outlasted Makyia Strunk, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6) and 10-8 in a second singles match that lasted more than two hours, highlighting the Lions’ 5-0 triumph over St. Hubert in Monday’s Catholic League girls tennis action.
Anna Degnan set the tone for O’Hara (4-2 overall, 3-0 league) with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at first singles.
In the Catholic Academies League:
Villa Joseph Marie 4, Sacred Heart 1 >> The second doubles tandem of Lindsey Dowd and Mary Dooner exited the court with a sense of accomplishment in posting the lone victory for the Lions (4-5, 2-5), taking the first set with a 9-7 tiebreaker before completing the sweep of Rebecca Downing and Sarah Shubert, 6-0. Downing and Shubert had defeated Dowd and Dooner in three sets in the teams’ first meeting of the season, which saw Villa Joe roll to a 5-0 win.
In the Ches-Mont League:
Coatesville 6, Sun Valley 1 >> Devin Cronin’s 6-2, 6-4 win at first singles kept the Vanguards from getting swept.
In a nonleague match:
Friends Select 3, Academy Park 2 >> Vickie Outland battled past Brianna Zhang for a 6-1, 6-4 win at second singles and Rajah Azor blanked Diana Epstein at third singles to lead the Knights (2-4), who used the match as a tune-up for Tuesday’s first of three meetings with Del Val League rival Chichester.
