Plymouth Whitemarsh flips script, stuns Wissahickon

WHITEMARSH >> Traditionally in the Suburban One League American Conference, Upper Dublin and Wissahickon are the two teams that usually find themselves atop the conference at the end of the season.

“The last two years we’ve gone 10-4 losing both matches to Wissahickon and both matches to Upper Dublin so we just weren’t able to get over that hump,” Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Jeff Kavanagh said.

PW is a team that frequently finds itself battling it out for the next slot. After completing a 10-4 season a year ago with its only losses coming at the hands of the two aforementioned teams Monday afternoon saw the Colonials tried to flip the script as it beat Wissahickon 203-212 at their home course Green Valley Country Club.

“203 is a great score for us,” Kavanagh said. “Against a team like Wissahickon to come in with 203 is huge for us. We’ve struggled a little bit to get that fifth score in and today we had a fifth score and sixth score that were right in there so that was a big win for us.”

The PW team consisting of Matt Aprile, Jon Green, Jake Bulter, Jon Silberman and Steve Roehm was the winning combination Monday as Butler shot a round low 38.

For Wissahickon, it just struggled throughout the day to consistently hit shots. Granted it was not playing on its home course but that certainly did not account for a nine shot differential between the teams. The top five for the Trojans consisted of Matt Graef, Noah Harrington, Phil James, Thomas Clements and Christea Park.

“We just couldn’t string anything together, that’s golf for you,” Wissahickon coach Kevin Brady said. “Some crucial puts didn’t come through and some the top guys (didn’t play their best).”

PW is hoping that snapping its losing skid against a team that its struggled with in prior years in the American Conference will help as league play continues in a year in which there appears to be more parity than in seasons prior. Thus far the only blemish on the Colonials league record a 203-205 loss to Hatboro-Horsham.

“The difference is this year I think there is going to be more teams fighting it out at the top,” Kavanagh said. “Where in the past there have been only one or two really strong teams. This year it seems there are more teams involved that could really fight it out and I don’t see any reason we can’t be one of those teams.”
