Walsh sizzles in 200 free to lead Penncrest to victory

Claire Walsh set a pool record in winning the 200-meter freestyle in 2 minutes, 3.24 seconds, and the freshman wasn’t done there as she also captured the 100 free and anchored a pair of relay wins as Penncrest downed Springfield, 101-80, Tuesday in Central League girls swimming action.

Shannon Jackson (50 free) joined Walsh and Madison Dickert on the victorious 200 medley and 200 free relays, while Isabella Moscatelli (100 butterfly) contributed to the latter.

Springfield was buoyed by double-winner Georgia Apostolu (200 IM, 100 backstroke).

Elsewhere in the Central League:

Strath Haven 94, Marple Newtown 72 >> Liz Olszewski (200 IM, 100 free) joined Camille Jablonski (50 free) in starting the unbeaten Panthers on the way to the 200 medley relay victory.

Marple Newtown prevailed in to 200 free relay and the 400 free relay, with Danielle Truax competing in both.

Haverford 100, Garnet Valley 86 >> Maddie Hart swept the 200-meter individual medley and the 100 backstroke to help the Fords hold off the Jaguars.

Grace Myers was another key contributor for Haverford, taking the 100 butterfly, finishing second in the 200 free and leading off the victorious 200 free relay.

The Jaguars more than held their own, collecting seven first-place finishes, as Noelle DiClemente (200 free, 400 free) and Jordan Stansfield (50 free, 100 free) each won a pair of individual events and teamed up to take the 400 free relay.

Lower Merion 108, Upper Darby 60 >> The Royals received some inspiring efforts from freshmen Megan Le, who won the 100 breaststroke, and Chloe Lam, who anchored the winning 400 free relay.

Boys

Matt Phillips was a constant force for Haverford High in Tuesday’s 103-77 Central League victory over Garnet Valley, sandwiching wins in the 50-meter free and 100 free by leading off the victorious 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.

Leo Goldszal also factored in the win, taking the 400 free and teaming with Phillips and Caleb O’Brien in the relay victories.

Garnet Valley saw Alex Mitchell (200 IM, 100 breaststroke), James Greek (200 free) and Shane Scudder (100 backstroke) complement their individual wins by combining to take the 400 free relay.

In other Central League action:

Strath Haven 100, Marple Newtown 80 >> Will Resweber (200 free, 100 free) contributed to a relay victory while the Yancey brothers did a number on the Tigers, as Wesley (50 free) and Oliver (200 IM) each won an individual event and teamed up to deliver wins in the 200 medley and 200 free relays.

Dylan Keer won the 500 free and the 100 back and anchored the 400 free relay for Marple Newtown.

Penncrest 126, Springfield 59 >> Double winners Justin Haffner (200 IM, 100 breaststroke) and Mike Paul (100 free, 100 backstroke) along with Jay Carl (50 free, 200 free relay) provided more than enough firepower for the Lions.

Springfield’s lone win came from diver Dave Bingaman.

Lower Merion 99, Upper Darby 79 >> Jack McConnell touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke and anchored the Royals’ winning effort in the 200 free relay, which included Mac Lehman — who also led off the victorious 400 free relay.
