OJR field hockey flexes its muscles in rout of Garnet Valley

BUCKTOWN >> The Wildcats have been on a roll.

Since starting the season with a non-league loss to Neshaminy, Owen J. Roberts has been in total control of just about every game since.

That was no different on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats took a 12-0 non-league win over Garnet Valley during the team’s Pink Out for the Play4TheCure benefit.

Owen J. Roberts head coach Amy Hoffman was tickled pink with her team’s effort, and not just because of the final score.

“Getting a win like this definitely gives us momentum and helps us to boost our confidence,” said Hoffman. “Aside from just pouring in the goals, we were finding ways to make better passes and take advantage of some really nice scoring chances. Those are the things we’ve been working on all season, so it’s really good to see them coming together.”

The win sends Owen J. Roberts to a 9-1 overall record while still boasting an unscathed 7-0 PAC-10 record and drops Garnet Valley to 1-8 overall with a 1-3 record in the Central League.

Senior Makena Aberle spearheaded the Wildcats’ offensive attack along with senior Corinne Gerber and sophomore Bridget Guinan.

Guinan registered five goals and added an assist while Aberle scored four times and had two helpers. Gerber found the back of the net twice and also tallied two assists.

“We were moving the ball really well and finding the holes in their defense,” said Aberle, whose four goal-showing puts her atop the PAC-10 with 17 goals scored on the season. “As the season has gone on, we’ve been working to improve our possessions and do a better job of controlling the ball.”

“Our outside post players did a really good job of getting open in front of the net,” said Gerber. “We did a good job of spreading out their defense and working it into the circle.”

Madison Schaeffer also registered a goal while Maddie Gebert had two assists. Amanda Lamb needed to make just one save in goal on the game.

Owen J. Roberts had total control of the possession, limiting Garnet Valley to just one corner and one shot on goal for the game.

The Wildcats kept the Jaguars from getting inside the scoring circle throughout the first 23 minutes of the game.

OJR ended with 29 shots on goal and dominated corner chances, 11-1.

Despite being blanked on the afternoon and taking the loss, Garnet Valley head coach Erin Fidler says her team has been making strides all season.

“Every day is a new day and a work in progress for us,” said Fidler. “As the season has gone on, our girls have continued to work hard and make improvements. It’s a great group with a great attitude. I know they just want to keep getting better.”

In the cage, keeper Bridget Elison 14 saves while Caroline Carruthers made a defensive save.

After taking a dominant 13-0 win over Pottsgrove Thursday  followed by another offensive outpouring on Saturday, Hoffman hopes the Wildcats can keep the momentum going into the difficult week coming up.

“We did a lot of nice things today and practiced a bunch of different movements with our offense,” she said. “Hopefully we’ll be able to bring that with us next week.”

OJR will look to continue its unbeaten run through the PAC-10 with a conference game against Phoenixville Wednesday followed by Upper Perkiomen on Friday.
