Spring-Ford’s Hayes earns 7th-place medal at state wrestling

Spring-Ford junior 113-pound wrestler Ryan Hayes garnered a seventh-place medal during the PIAA Class AAA Championships March 8 at the Giant Center in Hershey.

In an all-Pioneer Athletic Conference match, Hayes edged Upper Perkiomen’s Dustin Steffenino, 2-1.

Earlier in the day, Hayes (36-9) fell to Parkland’s Jacob Lizak, 8-1, while Steffenino (33-10) was beaten by Northampton’s Michael Scheetz, 3-1 in overtime, of the third-round consolation bout.

Also at 113, Owen J. Roberts junior Derek Gulotta (36-7) copped a fourth-place medal after copping eighth-place medals the previous two trips.

Perkiomen Valley senior 160-pounder Nick Giangiulio was eliminated from competition March 7 and did not medal. Giangiulio, who became the Vikings’ career leader in victories earlier this winter, ended the season with a 36-7 record.

Giangiulio was beaten in the second round of consolations by Matt Carr of Abington Heights, 6-0.

Elsewhere around the PAC-10, Pottsgrove junior Pat Finn and Boyertown sophomore Jordan Wood captured second-place silver medals.

Finn (285) fell to Solanco’s unbeaten senior, Thomas Haines, 6-1, in the championship finals. Haines (42-0) became a four-time state champion. Finn closed out an injury-curtailed season at 16-4.

Wood (41-2 at 220) came away with a second silver medal after dropping a 5-2 decision to Coatesville’s Michael Boykin (40-0), who also defeated Wood in the Southeast Regional tourney the previous weekend.

Methacton senior Tracey Green (40-3) ended up fourth at 285 with a 4-0 loss to Kiski Area’s Shane Kuhn. Green was also edged by Kuhn, on a 1-0 decision, during the semifinal round.

At 195, Boyertown senior Jordan Wertz (50-5) placed seventh following a 3-2 overtime victory against Shippensburg’s Dylan Herb. The 50 victories represents a single-season school record at Boyertown for Wertz.

At 138, Owen J. Roberts junior Demetri D’Orsaneo (35-12) fell to Manheim Township’s Cortlandt Schuyler, 10-3. Earlier in the day, D’Orsaneo dropped a 5-0 verdict to Punxsutawyney’s Kaleb Young.

Owen J. Roberts junior Dominick Petrucelli (145) was ousted the previous day and ended his season at 32-9. Pottstown sophomore Bryant Wise (132) also finished up on the second day of the three-day tourney to close out the year at 31-8.

NOTES

Boyertown finished up 13th in the final stands with 29.5 points while Owen J. Roberts came in 23rd with 21 points. … Chance Marsteller of Kennard Dale (170) became a four-time state champion with his 14-2 major decision over Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Kyle Coniker in the gold-medal bout. … The Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Assocation (PWCA) presented its Class AAA Coach of the Year award to Eric Mausser of District 7’s Franklin Regional.
